I wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself and why I wanted to start Hypnobirthing. As all of my family and friends know, this is something I am passionate about; if you start me on the topic of birth, you generally can’t get me to stop!
Where did it all start? Well, when my partner, Andrew and I found out we were expecting a few years ago, it really made me think about the birth and the future. After the initial shock (is this really happening?!) passed, I started researching my options for the birth we wanted. Being a Chiropractor, my values are deeply set in natural health, so planning for birth wasn’t any different. Initially, I discovered the great midwife-led program at Royal North Shore Hospital, and was assigned a wonderful midwife who I felt at ease with from the beginning. She would be the midwife I would have from beginning to end, it really is wonderful to have continuity of care, especially from a midwife.
The big point after this was how do we make it a wonderful natural birth? This is where my dear friend Erin stepped in. She had just finished her Hypnobirthing course and she offered to teach us. I must admit, initially I had no idea what Hypnobirthing was, but it sounded a little out there! All I could imagine was someone waving a clock in front of my eyes. After reading the background of it, I was really excited to give it a go. Erin was fantastic; she taught us the importance of preparation, relaxation and positive mindset for birth through the Hypnobirthing.
Our birth day came, and it turned out to be an amazing day. Crazy, huh?! We had a wonderful calm, positive, natural birth. I felt completely in control, and empowered. I know Hypnobirthing definitely helped me achieve that. Not only did we have the birth we wanted, but I feel I have gained so much more from the course than just that. It has made me be a more confident and determined person in my day to day life. My family can attest to that! I believe that this is one of the major advantages of having an empowering birth; it can help pave the way to a more confident mother.
I have been told my birth came down to being “lucky”, yet I don’t believe that. I was prepared and felt like I put the energy in creating my mind and body for “the big day”. Just like a runner prepares for a marathon. This is the way I see it. Expecting couples spend more time and research into their pram and cot than the birth of their child. So, this is what has brought me to this point. I am so excited to be a qualified Hypnobirthing Australia™ Childbirth Educator; I love to be able to help couples to achieve an empowering birth.
Andrew and I are expecting our next little Hypnobub in October and I can’t wait to go through it all again!
